Orthodontics FAQs
Why can't I have braces if I have gingivitis?
Q.
I have been told by my orthodontist that I cannot commence treatment due to my gum health. He has told me that I have gingivitis. Why can I not go ahead?
A.
Your orthodontist is recommending that you improve your gum health for very sound reasons. It has been shown that orthodontic treatment can make oral hygiene more difficult and this can lead to deterioration in gum health.
If you have existing gum inflammation it is clear that this potentially negative outcome is even more likely. Your orthodontist has your best interests at heart.
