How to Keep Your Teeth White

Straight, white teeth have long been the desirable dental look across cultures. Though the whitening options are nowadays numerous, from at-home options to professional treatments at the dentist, it is best to simply prevent your teeth from getting stained in the first place.

So, how is it that you can keep your pearly whites pearly white?

First and foremost, try your best to avoid products that will stain your teeth. This includes coffee, tea, cola and red wine. If you do have to consume these beverages, consider using a straw, so the liquid can bypass your teeth.

If you're a smoker, stop smoking. Beyond the other health repercussions, smoking is terrible for your teeth, staining them and damaging your gum and bones.

Use a whitening toothpaste. The effects will not be as dramatic as professional whitening, as toothpastes can only target superficial stains, but toothpaste can still help to maintain the whiteness of your teeth. Steer clear of do-it-yourself whitening concoctions, however, and if in doubt, consult your dentist before trying any new products.

If you do consume teeth-staining products, try to brush and rinse immediately afterward to minimise damage. That being said, regular brushing and flossing should be part of your dental routine regardless of what your diet includes, as well as regular trips to the dentist for a more thorough cleaning.

Taking care to keep your teeth white is particularly important if you wear braces, as poor oral hygiene can result in undesirable white spots on your teeth when your braces are removed.

Finally, if you've already let your teeth become stained, there's no reason you can't start anew. Talk to your dentist about the best whitening options for you, and once your teeth are restored to their whitest, use the aforementioned tips to keep them looking great!
